Mastercard FAQs

What is Master Card?

It is a worldwide credit card corporation that works with financial institutions to issue various payment cards. The cards distributed are all under the MasterCard brand, which is one of the three major credit / debit cards accepted at vendors across the world. The credit provided to card holders is controlled by the financial institution that issues the card and not MasterCard.

Why do I need to inform the bank before travelling?

Most banks and card companies keep track of spending patterns and may interpret an unexpected overseas purchase as credit card fraud. Your bank or card company could lock your account if you use your card in another country without notifying them.

The contact center currently runs from 7am to 10pm GMT from Monday through to Saturday each week.

What happens when I lose my Master Card?

  • Call your provider

As soon as you notice that your card has been stolen or is lost you must call your credit card provider. The sooner you call the better because until you’ve informed them, the card will not be blocked and you could be liable for any transaction. Once your card provider knows the card is no longer in your possession, your legal status changes. This means that you should be refunded in full for any future transactions that take place. In such instances call the NIB contact centre.

  • Follow up in writing

After calling to report the loss or theft of your card it is best to follow up in writing either a letter or an e-mail.  State your account number, date, time and place when you first noticed your card was missing. On top of this, keep records of any further transactions for future reference.
